A Cabra-loura (Lucanus cervus), é o maior coleóptero da
Europa. Os machos podem medir entre os 30 a 90 milímetros, e no caso das fêmeas
o tamanho oscila entre os 28 a 45
milímetros. O dimorfismo sexual desta espécie é bem acentuada, já que o macho
tem a cabeça e as mandíbulas maiores que a fêmea.
Na Europa, o habitat destes
coleópteros são os bosques e florestas de caduciólias, embora possa ser
encontrado em parques e jardins.
A sua alimentação em estado
larval consiste em madeira em decomposição. Já em adulto alimenta-se de seiva
de feridas e frutos maduros.
O seu comportamento parece variar
entre nocturno/crepuscular na região norte, enquanto em sul é predominante
diurno. Em Portugal, mais precisamente no Parque natural da Peneda Gerês, é
mais nocturno/crepuscular mas existem observações durante o dia na região do
Porto.
Esta espécie está em declínio. A
sua principal ameaça é a devastação das florestas autóctones, a limpeza de
madeira em decomposição e a substituição por árvores não indígenas na região.
The Stag Beetle (Lucanus cervus) is the largest beetle in Europe. Males
may have between 30 to 90 mm, and in the case of
females the size ranges from 28 to 45 mm. The sexual
dimorphism of this species is well marked, since the
male has the head and jaws larger than the female.
In Europe, the habitat of
these beetles is pasture woodland and forests, although it
can be found in parks and gardens.
In larval state they feed on decaying
wood. In adulthood they feed on sap from wounds
and ripe fruit.
Their behaviour seems to vary between night/twilight in
the north reagions, while in the south it is predominantly diurnal. In
Portugal, more precisely in the natural
park of Peneda Geres, they are visible at night/twilight but
there are observations during the day in the Porto region.
This species is declining. Its
main threat is the destruction of native forests, the
clearing of decaying wood and replacement
by non-indigenous trees in the region.
