O Garajau-comum (Sterna sandvicensis) é um exímio mergulhador, com uma velocidade elevada quando mergulha na captura de peixe.
Sem dimorfismo sexual, o adulto distingue-se de um juvenil por não ter as asas e costas malhadas. O adulto (Verão e Inverno) tem a parte de baixo branca, as costas e asas de um cinzento prateado, as patas pretas, o bico longo e fino de cor preta com uma ponta amarelada. No Inverno tem a cabeça preta e a frente branca. No Verão a cabeça é toda preta. O comprimento é de 36cm-41cm, com uma envergadura de 95cm-105cm.
Em Portugal é possível encontrar todo o ano, mas o seu número aumenta no final do Verão e no Inverno, portanto entre Agosto e Fevereiro.
Podem ser avistados em orlas costeiras, estuários, zonas portuárias e zonas de ria.
The Sandwich Tern (Sterna sandvicensis) is an accomplished diver, with a high speed when diving to catch fish.
Without sexual dimorphism, the adult is distinguished from a juvenile for not having spotted wings and back. The adult (summer and winter) has a white bottom, back and wings of a silver gray, black legs, long thin beak black with a yellow tip. In winter the head is black and white front. In summer the head is all black. The length is 36cm-41cm, with a wingspan of 95cm-105cm.
In Portugal you can find all year, but their number increases in late summer and winter, so between August and February.

Guincho-Comum (Larus ridibundus), é uma gaivota pequena em comparação com outras
gaivotas mais conhecidas. Pode medir 35cm a 39cm de comprimento e 86cm a 99cm
de envergadura.
O
juvenil apresenta uma plumagem castanha no pescoço e costas. Já o imaturo (1º
inverno) apresenta um bico
vermelho com a ponta preta, o pescoço e as costas mudam para cinzento, mas
mantêm as asas castanhas com uma faixa. O adulto (Inverno), perde a cor
castanha nas asas e ficam cinzentas, enquanto as patas adquirem uma cor
vermelha vivida e não alaranjadas. Quando chega o Verão, os adultos adquirem um
capuz castanho e ficam com um bico totalmente vermelho. É comum confundirem
esta ave com a Gaivota-de-cabeça-preta (Larus
melanocephalus), mas é fácil distinguir porque não têm as pontas das asas e
cauda pretas, ao contrário da cabeça que é totalmente preta.
O
Guincho-Comum alimenta-se de minhocas, sementes, peixe e insectos, tanto do
solo como da água.
Em
Portugal é encontrado durante o inverno. Podem ser observados entre Julho e
Março, embora em finais de Junho possam ser encontrados adultos com a plumagem
de Verão. O habitat deles não é só limitado à costa. Podem ser encontrados em
parques, jardins e centro urbanos.
The Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus) is a small gull compared to others. It can measure 35cm to 39cm long and 86cm to 99cm wingspan.
The juvenile has
a brown plumage on the neck and back. Since the immature (1st winter) has a red
bill with black tip, neck and back change to gray, but keep the wings with a
brown band. The adult (winter), loses its brown color and the wings are gray,
while the legs get a red and not orange lived. When summer arrives, adults get
a hood with a brown nose and are fully red. It is common to confuse this bird
with the Gull Black-headed (Larus melanocephalus), but it is easy to
distinguish because they have the tips of the wings and tail black, unlike the
head that is completely black.
The Black-headed Gull feeds on earthworms,
seeds, fish and insects, both soil and water.
In Portugal it is
found during the winter. Can be observed between July and March, although at
the end of June can be found with the adult summer plumage. Their habitat is
not only limited to the coast. It can be found in parks, gardens and urban
centers.
